Winning Weekend: Twins Softball Reaches The Postseason

Twins softball took on the weekend with full force to push for a spot in Regional play. The weekend was spent away at Jefferson CC on Saturday and Cayuga CC on Sunday. The Twins came out on top going 3-1 for the weekend, splitting the games with Jefferson and taking the two from Cayuga.

Saturday:

C-GCC came out swinging and took the win for game one 9-1 against Jefferson. The first three innings of the game was quiet for both teams. After a few runs scored in the fourth, Brooke Hapeman came up big smacking a grand-slam to extend the Twins lead to 7-0. The Twins scored another two runs in the sixth inning before Jefferson put across their only run of the game.

Veronica Mayhew and D'arcy stayed hot at the plate. Mayhew went 3-4 with two RBI's and one run scored. Bittner went 2-4 with two RBI's and one run scored. Jordyn Grossman contributed an RBI as well. The Twins collected a total of 15 hits for game one.

Jaime Staunch takes the win on the mound going six innings and allowing only five hits, one earned run, and two strikeouts.

Game two, the Twins fell short to Jefferson with the final score of 4-3. Jefferson started the first inning out scoring a run but the Twins grabbed two back in the top of the second and another run in the top of the third. Jefferson wouldn't give up and tied the score in the bottom of the third making the game 3-3. Both teams remained scoreless for the fourth and fifth innings. Jefferson was able to push one across in the bottom of the sixth and the Twins were unable to answer.

Jaime Staunch went 2-3 with a double and a RBI. Veronica Mayhew and Karlee Deaver were able to push across a run each. The Twins were only able to collect six hits total for game two.

Coach Comments: "These were big games for us and we came out in the first game and had some big hits for us and Jaime threw the ball great.  The second game was frustrating because we had base runners all game but just could catch a break and find a hole when we hit. We stranded a lot of runners and let the second game slip away. Shannon and D'Arcy did a great job on the mound but we just couldn't help them out offensively"

Sunday:

Day two of games, the CG Softball team was ready for Cayuga as their bats caught fire in game one, winning 10-6. Cayuga started the game off scoring a run in the bottom of the first but the Twins answered back with two of their own. Cayuga wasn't done as they platted another two runs in the bottom of the third but the Twins had a big fourth inning, scoring six runs to take the lead 8-3. Jefferson scored three more runs before the end of the game but the Twins solidified their win with two runs in the sixth inning.

The Twins collected a total of 23 hits in game one. Jordynn Grossman had a big day at the plate as she went 3-4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored, and three RBI's. Shannon McNeff went 5-5 with a double and three runs scored. Veronica Mayhew and Angela Grandinetti were able to collect two RBI's each. Brooke Hapeman, Jaime Staunch, and Caitlin Rice each scored an RBI.

Jaime Staunch collects another win on the mound going the full seven innings facing 35 batters and only allowing five earned runs and six strikeouts.

Game Two was a battle for the Twins as Cayuga started scoring late in the game. C-GCC pulled out with the win, 11-10.

The Twins had a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth before D'arcy Bittner extended it with a two run shot over the fence. Bittner continued with a big bat as she extended the lead again in the fifth inning with another two run homer making the score 11-6. Bittner finished the game going 3-3 and had two stolen bases.

McNeff went 2-4 with two RBI's. Gould, Staunch, and Grossman each scored an RBI. The team had a total of 15 hits.

Bittner took the win on the mound going the full seven innings only allowing nine hits after facing 35 batters and striking out three.

C-GCC Twins Softball finished the regular season with an overall record of 16-16 and with a 14-8 record in the region. The region record pushed the Twins into a post season spot and they will be traveling to Herkimer CC on Tuesday, May 10th with first pitch at 4 PM. Go Twins!

Coach Comments on postseason: "Qualifying for Regionals is a great accomplishment. It is extremely tough to do so in our region.  I was a little shocked on us getting the 8th seed to be honest. I felt we did enough in the region as a whole and especially after this last weekend going 3-1 against two tough teams.  Obviously the committee thought otherwise. Herkimer is a very talented team and extremely well coached.  Our girls have worked hard all season and this is just another test along the way. It's a one game playoff so anything can happen."
