Spohler Turns in Double-Double as Twins Pick Up Second Win on the Week

Sophomore Sawyer Spohler (East Durham, NY) tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Twins of Columbia-Greene Community College past division II SUNY Orange, 79-75, Thursday night.

The game stayed back and forth through most of the first half, with the Twins getting up by as many as 8 points before heading into halftime with a 7 point lead, 44-37.  Spohler scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in the half.

The Twins stretched the lead to as many as 15 in the second half, but the defense still struggled to make stops down the stretch.  As the lead narrowed in the final minutes, freshman Peter Fortes (Middletown, NY) was able to seal the victory with two clutch free throws with 15 seconds remaining.

"I was happy with the teams' overall effort tonight.  I was very happy with Sawyer and Derwyn.  They provided a big boost for us all night.  And of course, Peter Fortes sealed the victory making two free throws with 15 seconds remaining," Coach Rickard said.

Derwyn Thompson (Jamaica, NY) continued on his hot streak, tallying 24 points and 7 rebounds on the win.  Tydrea Rodriguez (Middletown, NY) added 11 points and Fortes contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds in the narrow victory.

The Twins improve to 6-5 on the season and travel to Watertown, NY to take on Jefferson Community College this Saturday at 1PM.
