Rip Van Winkle

Twins Mascot

Rip Van Winkle is about 200 years old and currently serves as the mascot for Columbia-Greene Community College’s sports teams. He is a dutchmen living in the Catskill mountains. One day, around the start of the Revolutionary War, Rip went out into the woods with his dog.  He stumbled upon a group of people bowling and drinking.  Rip immediately joined in and eventually fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke, he noticed that his gun had rusted, and he had a beard over a foot long.  When he arrives back in town, everyone he knows is gone and he finds out he has missed the Revolutionary War.  Nowadays, Rip enjoys bowling at various alleys in the area.  His enjoys all the sports here at Columbia-Greene Community College.  Though it is hard to get him out of bed, he frequently attends events at the college.  His favorites are the ones that offer food.  Below are some fun facts about Twins mascot Rip Van Winkle.

What was your favorite athletics moment at school from the past year?

My favorite moment by far was our pep rally to celebrate the Women’s Basketball Team after they were ranked fifth in the nation among DIII teams by the NJCAA!

If you could teach one class at SUNY, what would it be and why?

I pitched the college a Sleep Study 101 course, but it didn’t fly. So, I think teaching Environmental Studies with an emphasis on the local area would be a great fit for me.

In your free time, what is your favorite NY activity to do?

Most people know I’m fond of hiking the Catskill Mountains … and napping.

If you weren’t a mascot for your school, what job would you have?

That’s easy. Professional bowler. I missed my calling…
