Softball Finishes Regular Season

Freshman Rachel Nielsen got the start in game one for the Twins.  She held the Kats scoreless after two innings.  The Twins struck first with two runs in the top of the third inning.  Nielsen ran into some trouble in the bottom half of the inning.  The Twins allowed one run in the bottom of the third.  The Twins struck back in the top of the fourth and drove in two more runs to put them ahead 4 – 1.  The Twins continued their offensive dominance as they get the victory, 12 – 3.  Rachel Nielsen went seven innings and allowed just three runs on ten hits.  Freshman Justine Albin went two for three at the plate and drove in three runs as she hit her second home run of the season.  Freshman Baylee Cox went two for five at the plate and hit her fourth home run of the season to score three runs.  Cox also picked up a stolen base.  Sophomore Tori Popp went one for four at the bottom of the lineup and hit her second home run of the season to drive in two runs. 

Freshman Kaylee Hoffman was handed the ball to start game two of the double-header for the Twins.  After a scoreless first inning, the Kats got the first run across the plate in the second inning.  They scored two more in the third to take the lead, 3 – 0.  The Twins put up four runs in the fourth inning to put them back in it.  The Kats would get the lead right back in the top of the fifth, 5 – 4.  The Twins continued to fight but they eventually fell to Erie Community College, 10 – 6.  Kaylee Hoffman went six innings for the Twins and allowed seven runs on six hits.  Freshman Justine Albin had another great game going two for four with two runs batted in.  Freshman Rachel Nielsen went one for three and drove in one run. 

After getting some rest Saturday night, the Twins traveled to Niagara County Community College to take on the Thunder Wolves on Sunday.

Freshman Rachel Nielsen made her 20th start of the season against the Thunder Wolves.  She shut down Niagara in the first inning but ran into some trouble in the second.  Not before the Twins break the ice with one run the top of the inning.  The Thunder Wolves come back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  They take the lead, 2 -1 after two innings.  Nielsen shut down the opposing team the rest of the way.  The Twins bats struggle though as they lose the low scoring game, 2 – 1.  Rachel Nielsen pitched seven innings allowing just tow runs on three hits and struck out three.  Sophomore Tori Popp was the only Twin to record a hit in the game. 

Rachel Nielsen would get the start in game two of the double-header as the Twins tried to pick up their 18th win of the season.  The Twins struck first in this one with one run in the first inning.  They picked up two more in the second to give them a 3 – 1 lead after two innings.  Nielsen would run into trouble in the third as the Thunder Wolves tack on two runs to make it a tied game after three, 3 – 3.  Both teams went scoreless through the next three frames till the seventh inning.  With the game tied, the Thunder Wolves drove in two runs to give them the lead, 5 – 3.  The Twins attempted a comeback but ultimately lose a close one to the Thunder Wolves, 5 – 3.  Rachel Nielsen pitched all seven innings for the Twins allowing just one earned run on six hits.  Freshman Baylee Cox got on base every time she came up to bat.  She went four for four and crossed home plate twice.  Cox also picked up her sixth stolen base of the season.  Freshman Kaylee Hoffman went one for four and drove in one run for the Twins.  Hoffman also picked up a stolen base. 

The Twins regular season comes to an end with a tough road trip. However, they look to bounce back when they take on the Herkimer Generals in the first round of the playoffs.  This game will take place at Herkimer Community College Tuesday May 8th.  First pitch is at 4 pm.
