Twins Softball
Softball Opens Season with Victory

The Twins softball team traveled to Myrtle Beach this weekend to spend their spring break competing in the Snowbird Tournament.  They met up with Monroe Community College in Myrtle Beach on Sunday to play their first game of the season.

The starting pitcher for the Twins was freshman Rachel Nielsen.  She pitched three scoreless innings till Monroe hit a homerun to score the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning.  Nielsen led off the bottom half of the inning with a triple to put her in scoring position with no outs.  The next batter, Jaclyn Gehring, came up and smacked a single to left field to score the runner from third.  This tied up the game 1 – 1.  It remained a tied game until the bottom of the sixth inning.  After getting a couple of runners on base, Baylee Cox ripped a triple to score the go-ahead run and put the Twins up 3 – 1 with just one inning to go.  Nielsen ran into trouble in the seventh as Monroe loaded the bases.  A ground ball scored one run for Monroe to make it a 3 – 2 game.  With two outs and the tying run on third, Nielsen struck out the next batter to seal the victory.

Freshman Rachel Nielsen got her first win of the season.  She pitched all seven-innings allowing only two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.  Nielsen also went 2 – 3 at the plate with a double and a triple.  Freshman Baylee Cox batted in the game winning run.  The shortstop finished the game going 2 – 4 at the plate with a triple and two runs batted in.  Freshman Jaclyn Gehring was perfect at the plate going 3 – 3 with one run batted in.

The Twins will officially begin the tournament with two games on Monday March 12th.  At 9 am they will be facing Deleware Technical Community College and after that game at 11 am the Twins will take on Wells College.
